１８６９年生まれ。グジャラート州ポルパンダル出身。
弁護士、宗教家、政治指導者。
- ヒンドゥー教ジャイナ派の教育を受け、英国で修学した後、８９年弁護士の資格を得る。
- ９３年から１９１４年まで、南アフリカのナタールで商館訴訟を手掛ける。
- その間、現地のインド人労働者の受けていた差別虐待に抗議し平等権獲得闘争を指導、非暴力闘争の端緒を開く。
- 帰印後は、労働運動、民族解放独立運動の指導に専念。
- 英国のインド撤退を要求、不服従運動を提唱し、インド独立の父と慕われた。
- ４８年、狂信的ヒンドゥー教徒により暗殺された
